INTRODUCTION TO HEALTHCARE

General Description

This course is focused on general knowledge of healthcare. On the one hand, we will begin with de basics of the structure and function of the human body, and the course will move on to healthcare science, highlighting first the concept of health and the determinants of health, as well as the organization of the most common health systems models in the world. We will also study the most frequent global diseases and those that are emerging at the moment. On the other hand, this course will follow a more practical approach, focusing on basic aspects of health care, such as first aid, basic life support, medication administration, wound care, mobilization on the injured, nutrition, and care for people with diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure.

  • TOPIC 9: Most common medications. Medication administration.
  • TOPIC 10: Wound care basics.
  • TOPIC 11: Trauma management and mobilization of the injured people.
  • TOPIC 12: Nutrition. Hospital nutrition.
  • TOPIC 13: Care for patients with diabetes mellitus. Measuring blood glucose.
  • TOPIC 14: Care for patients with high blood pressure. Blood pressure measurement.
  • TOPIC 15: Visit to the HLA La Inmaculada University Hospital in Granada.
  • TOPIC 16: Student presentations. One presentation on proposed topics.

Practical lessons.

Be able:

  • To have knowledge about healthcare.
  • To have knowledge about the concepts of health and its determinants.
  • To have basic knowledge about the health systems of different countries.
  • To acquire knowledge about the most frequent and most relevant diseases in the health of the population.
  • To have theoretical and practical skills in first aid, Basic Life Support, trauma management and mobilization of the injured people.
  • To have basic knowledge about wound care and nutrition.
  • To have general knowledge of basic pharmacology and drug administration.
  • To acquire theoretical and practical skills in the care of people with diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure.
  • To learn how to measure blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

Assessment

To be able to be evaluated attendance is needed to 80 per cent of the classes.

There will be a Partial Exam and a Final Exam. Both mandatory.

  • The two exams will be with written test questions.
  • The maximum total score will be 10.
  • The Partial exam will have a maximum of 3 points. (30% of the final grade).
  • The Final exam will have a maximum of 4 points. (40% of the final grade).

The presentation will have a maximum score of two points (20% of the final grade), of which, one point will be evaluated in relation to the way of exposing and clarity in the exhibition and the other point, will be related to the agenda and content.

Participation in class will have a maximum of 1 point. (10% of the final grade).
